FDA lawyer, Mr. Michael M. Landa, is asked to clarify green tea statement based on science July 5, 2005 – Sin Hang Lee, M.D., submitted a scientific analysis to Mr. Michael M. Landa of the FDA and brought to his attention the flaws in the two negative reports that the FDA relied on in making the conclusion that "it is highly unlikely that green tea reduces the risk of breast and prostate cancer". Dr. Lee pointed out that in 20% of the breast cancer patients surveyed for the statistical studies the diagnosis of a cancer had never been confirmed. The majority of the subjects surveyed for the two studies were residents living in northern rural Japan, where ready access to the "typical green tea" recognized to be effective in cancer research by the U.S. National Cancer Institute is difficult. Dr. Lee asked the FDA to re-consider the scientific information newly brought to its attention and to clarify its statement on the green tea claim based on science in order to not confuse the consumers.
