Dear Friends: Green tea extracts containing high levels of EGCG are added to a drink for calorie burning by companies such as Nestlé and Coca-Cola, which are facing a lawsuit for making fraudulent claims. For more details, see the announcement on the web site of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Dr. Lee’s TeaForHealth™ is the first company that follows the recommendation of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to use EGCG as a yardstick to measure the quality of natural green tea for its health benefits. Dr. Lee’s TeaForHealth™ offers the NCI-defined “typical” green tea containing 710 mcg/mL EGCG with two FDA-granted qualified health claims. While green tea made from tea leaves containing high EGCG is safe to drink, green tea extracts used for weight reduction have been reported to cause severe liver damage in humans (Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2005;17:1135-7). In case you missed the news, the FDA has recently approved “green tea extract” as a prescription drug for topical treatment of genital warts caused by human papillomaviruses (HPVs). Since some HPVs are known cancer-causing agents, the FDA has subtly agreed that the components of green tea at the right dose may be effective in controlling a genital growth caused by a potentially cancer-causing virus. For more information, see the announcement by the American Botanical Council. If you wonder why green tea does not reduce cancer risk in northeast Japan as reported in the web site of Top Cancer News. Dr. Lee has offered his explanation in detail.
