On June 22, 2007, the FDA issued the Dietary Supplements Final Rule to ensure the strength of dietary supplements and the absence of harmful contaminants in the products. In a letter dated February 25, 2005, Dr. Lee asked the FDA to set a standard for the green tea that is used by the consumers for health protection. The NCI standard for green tea leaves is 7.1% EGCG. The tea leaves for health protection should be free of pesticides. The maximum allowable residual lead in the tea leaves should not exceed 5 ppm. Fluoride levels in bottled tea should not exceed 2.4 ppm to avoid tea fluorosis, as set by the FDA for other bottled beverages. The FDA has recently approved green tea extracts as a topical drug to treat human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced external genital condylomatous lesions, for the first time affirming the antiviral activity of green tea if the right dose is delivered to a lesion. Green tea components have been shown to have an antiviral effect against many viruses, including the AIDS virus. About 4 years ago, a group of scientists reported that
appropriate green tea products administered at the right dosage orally or
topically are effective in reversing the progression of HPV-infected
uterine cervical lesions, which may lead to cancer. Interested readers may
read the
report
about the protective effects of green tea extracts on human cervical
lesions. The above FDA decision and the report show that HPV-induced
lesions may be reversible when proper green tea products are administered.
Green tea may be protective against the HPV infections for which the
type-specific Gardasil® HPV vaccines are not effective. Dr. Sin
Hang Lee and his colleagues have developed an accurate genotyping test to
monitor HPV infections before and after immunization to develop prevention
strategy for the individual patients. Interested readers may read Dr.
Lee’s recently published scientific report on routine
HPV genotyping
by DNA sequencing and consult their physicians on the importance of
accurate HPV genotyping in non-surgical management of HPV infections. For a more details, please visit the News & Events section of our web site. |
